What Makes a Driveway Last

Since 2017 we have broken out a lot of failed driveways in the southwest suburbs, and they teach the same lesson every time. The concrete on top is usually not the problem. What is underneath is: a thin slab, no real stone base, or soft clay that was never removed. Salt and freeze-thaw cycles just finish the job. So our honest advice is to judge a driveway bid by what it says about the ground, not just the finish. Our replacements start with complete removal of the old drive. We dig to firm soil, take out anything soft or organic, and lay crushed stone compacted in layers. For everyday passenger vehicles, a home drive commonly lands in the 4 to 5 inch range; a heavy pickup, work van or trailer parked there earns extra depth plus steel under the wheel paths. The surface is pitched so snowmelt and rain run toward the street instead of back into the garage, and the end is tied in neatly at the street or alley. Control joints keep cracking orderly. Finally, we tell you plainly how long to stay off it, because parking too early is one of the easiest ways to damage a new slab.

Inside a Driveway Replacement

Single car or double wide, these essentials apply.

  • Removal of the old drive

Broken up, loaded and hauled off. We do not pour over failing concrete.

  • Ground rebuilt

Soft or organic soil dug out down to something firm.

  • Packed stone layers

Crushed stone compacted in lifts for uniform support.

  • Depth for your vehicles

Typical for cars, thicker and reinforced for heavy trucks.

  • Pitch to the street

Water runs away from the garage and toward a safe outlet.

  • Neat street end

A clean tie-in where the drive meets the street or alley.

  • Honest cure timeline

Clear guidance on when to walk and when to park.

Replacing Your Driveway

  1. Measure and ask

We measure, note the drainage and ask what you park there. The written price covers every part.

  2. Tear out and rebuild the ground

Old drive removed, poor soil swapped out, stone tamped and forms set.

  3. Pour, cure and hand back

Pour, finish and jointing, then a protected cure and a cleared site.

Why Our Driveways Earn Referrals

  • Thickness by vehicle

We pour for what you drive, not a single default depth.

  • Ground before finish

The bulk of our labor happens below the finished surface.

  • Straight answers on timing

When it is safe to park, you will know exactly.

  • Old drive fully removed
  • Soft soil replaced
  • Reinforced for heavy loads
  • Pitched away from the garage
